Description

There are strong, scientifically based indications and facts of experience that sodium bicarbonate can contribute to the enhancement of performances in anaerobic (workout from 1 to 7 minutes) sports. Together with carbon, sodium bicarbonate keeps the acidity of the blood within the confines of 6.8 and 7.8. During intensive workouts the amount of carbon in the blood increases which leads to acidity. Sodium Bicarbonate Gold is a dietary supplement, which strengthens the sodium carbonate buffer in order for the acid to be neutralized in the blood. This way, the acidity of the muscles gets delayed thus the workout can be prolonged.

Natrium Bicarbonate Gold is specifically developed for professional athletes. Use in consultation with your trainer.

NZVT-Certified
Natrium Bicarbonate Gold is endowed with the NZVT logo. NZVT is an abbreviation of the ‘Nederlands Zekerheidssysteem Voedingssupplementen Topsport’ (Anti Doping Authority for the Netherlands.) This certification guarantees the athlete that the dietary supplement is free of doping.

Since December 2012 we are only allowed to publish product data sheets and product information that contain approved health claims by a European scientific organization – as a result of the European regulations on nutrient claims. When training at high intensity, lactic acid is formed and split into lactate and hydrogen ions (H+ ions).  The formed lactate can serve as an energy source or it can be converted into glucose in the liver. The H+ ions can accumulate in the muscle and cause acidification. It is not the lactic acid or lactate, but the H+ ions that are responsible for acidification. The stacking of H+ ions ensures that the acidity is lowered (the pH-value goes down). Enzymatic will and muscle contractions will not work as well, which causes a decrease in performance.

The body has various ways to stop the accumulation of H+ ions in the muscle. One of them is through buffers. Those are formed inside the body. Examples of buffers are: bicarbonate, carnosine (see beta-alanine) and phosphates. Bicarbonate is normally produced by the kidneys and regulates the acidity in the muscle by reducing the content of H+ ions. However, the stock is not inexhaustible, but can be increased by the intake of baking powder or sodium bicarbonate. By supplementing sodium bicarbonate, you will increase the capacity to buffer H+ ions and prevent acidification. Meta-analysis have shown that the performance improves 2 to 3% (power, speed, time it takes to get exhausted).

Can be used during

  • High-intensity efforts that last between 1 and 7 minutes, such as walking (medium distances 400 – 15000 meters), rowing, swimming (100 – 400 meters), track cycling and road cycling (short time trials and prologues).
  • High-intensity efforts with an interval character that takes place above the lactate threshold, such as team sports (football, hockey, etc.) and martial arts.
  • Efforts made just below the lactate threshold, such as time trials in cycling and running longer distances (5000 and 10.000 meter).

Suggested use

  • One can choose to use an acute or multi-day charge protocol. An acute protocol seems to work best according to current literature.
  • An example of the acute protocol; use 0.1 gram of the supplement per kilogram bodyweight with 250 ml water or an isotonic sports drink 150, 120 and 90 minutes before starting or before it should take effect.
  • If the acute protocol is the cause of gastrointestinal complaints, different time intervals and other dosages can be applied. If this does not help, a multiple-day charging protocol can be used in which three dosages of 0.1 gram per kilogram bodyweight are taken after the meal two to three days beforehand.

Additional information

  • The use of sodium bicarbonate can lead to weight gains. A quarter of it consists of sodium. Keep in mind it can lead to a temporary weight gain of 0.5 to 1 kg.
  • Excessive use of sodium bicarbonate can have an effect on the potassium balance.
  • When used frequently, be sure to follow a potassium rich diet.
  • The use of sodium bicarbonate can cause gastrointestinal discomfort (bloated stomach, abdominal cramps, nausea and belching). Most complaints are observed after about 30 to 60 minutes after ingestion.
  • In practice, the use of sodium bicarbonate during high-intensity efforts may cause a different feeling in the legs. Sometimes athletes get the feeling that they are not performing optimally, but the performance shows otherwise.
  • In order to gain insight into the above effects and processes it is always (!) advisable to test sodium bicarbonate several times during training situations before applying it to competitions.
