His international breakthrough came in 2015 when, at just nineteen, he became Supercross World Champion. A year later, in 2016, he claimed the world title in the time trial. However, the absolute highlight came in 2021 when he won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in an impressive fashion. Just five days before the final, Niek collided hard with a Japanese official who suddenly crossed the track during a training session, resulting in a small fracture in his kneecap. Despite this injury, he lined up at the start and went on to win the gold medal!

After the Olympics, Niek faced a challenging period. In 2022, he suddenly felt completely done with BMX and didn’t touch his bike for three months. This break gave him the space to reflect, and he realized that it was crucial to find his own path. However, in April 2024, he was once again sidelined, this time by an inflamed heart muscle, which prevented him from defending his Olympic title in Paris.
In May 2025, after eight months away, Niek finally returned to the BMX track at Papendal. “Felt great to feel some nerves before hitting the berm jump and the 8m hill again for the first time,” he says with enthusiasm. His determination and passion for the sport remain as strong as ever. “I love the speed, the racing, and the fact that you can always keep challenging yourself. Every track is different, so you never get bored.”
