Kay Smits grew up in a true handball family, where his love for the sport was instilled from a young age. Both his father, mother, brother, and sister were part of the Dutch national handball team. In his youth, Kay combined handball with athletics, but at the age of twelve, he decided to focus entirely on handball. He wanted to improve and dedicate more time to this sport.

Since 2016, Kay has been part of the national handball team, where he has developed into one of the key players for the Netherlands. With his powerful shot and game intelligence, he has become a crucial asset to the team.

Kay’s international breakthrough came during his two-year stint at the German club SC Magdeburg. In 2023, he made history by becoming the first Dutch handball player ever to win the Champions League. In the final against Polish team Kielce, he scored eight goals, becoming his team’s top scorer and playing a pivotal role in their 30-29 victory. A year earlier, in 2022, he also won the German Handball Bundesliga with Magdeburg.

After his successful time with Magdeburg, Kay moved to SG Flensburg-Handewitt. He was looking for a larger and more challenging role within the team, which he found at Flensburg. In his first season, he helped lead the team to victory in the European League.
