Small workouts make it possible for the joints to stay supple and in good condition. The joints will be pressured too heavily during long and intense training sessions. The joints are most vulnerable during contact sports and sports with many turning movements, such as: football, hockey, martial arts and sprinting. In most sports the joints of the lower extremities; such as the hips, knees and ankles, are heavily pressured.
A recreational athlete pressures the musculoskeletal much less. Untrained athletes have less muscular strength, which means a less intensive training session could lead to heavy pressure on the joints. The intensity and duration of a training session are not the only factors. Practicing sports with overweight could lead to more damage to the joints than the sports exercise itself.
Active athletes know that very intense exercise or an injury sensitive sport puts a lot of pressure on the joints. They try to take good care of their joints by following a healthy lifestyle. It is important to listen to the pain signals of the body and to take sufficient time to recover from an injury. It is also of great importance to have a good warming-up and cooling-down, and to slowly increase the pressure during strength training.
